Private Escape Rooms

Before we switched to entirely private escape rooms in 2019, one of the most common questions we received was:

“Will other people in the room with us?” 😱

Back then, the answer was yes. But today, we are happy to say no!

There are pros and cons to playing escape rooms with strangers, but in the end, we believe the escape room experience is better when you know everyone you’re playing with.

Here are some things to take into consideration when choosing your escape room experience and deciding whether or not to book a private escape room. 🤔

Wildcards 🃏

You’re taking a gamble when you play with strangers. If they are well above or well below your experience level with escape rooms, some uncomfortable dynamics could arise where one group dominates the game and the other barely gets a chance to play.

On the other hand, we’ve seen plenty of cases where strangers make the difference in whether or not a group escapes!

Cost 💵

Many escape rooms will charge you more if you have a smaller group. For example, a group of two players may pay $60 per player, but a group of 8 pays $30 per player for the exact same room.

Other escape rooms offer private games only when you book the entire room. For example, the cost of one player multiplied by the room’s maximum capacity.

At Puzzle Effect, the room is yours whether you book one spot or ten.

Special Moments 💍

We’ve seen our fair share of birthday parties, anniversaries, and even proposals in our escape rooms. (In fact, we have special puzzles whose solutions are “Happy Birthday” “Happy Anniversary”, “Will You Marry Me?” and more! To learn more, fill out the form on this page.)

In general, we’re big believers in “The more, the merrier!” But, even we can admit that celebrating something special can feel a little awkward with people you don’t know in the room.

Of course, you can always book the entire room if you are planning something special in an escape room that does not include private rooms in your booking.

How do private escape rooms work?

One of the trickiest parts of escape rooms isn’t even the puzzles – it’s actually organizing a group! Typically the onus is on one person in the group to put down the money to reserve the spots, then get paid back. This can be tricky when plans change. 😳

But, at Puzzle Effect, booking just one player reserves the entire room. Then, additional members of your team can pay for their spot upon arrival.
